Older Adults Mental Health First Aid Course Description (NCMW)
The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Elder CSC course is an evidence-based, early-intervention training designed for adults — including family members, caregivers, nursing staff, health and human services workers, and community members — who interact with older adults. It is based on the international MHFA Guidelines adapted for the U.S. and is intended to expand mental health “literacy” and reduce stigma toward older adults experiencing mental health challenges.
Purpose and Audience
The course equips participants with the skills to recognize, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges in older adults, providing initial support until professional help is available. It is especially relevant for those working in or supporting older populations, as older adults may have unique risk factors and presentation of mental health issues.
Course Content
The 8-hour program covers:
- Common mental health problems in older adults: depression, anxiety, traumatic events, psychosis, substance abuse.
- Mental health crises: suicidal thoughts/behaviors, non-suicidal self-injury, panic attacks, severe psychotic episodes, effects of substance/alcohol use, and aggressive behavior.
- Unique risk factors and warning signs for older adults.
- How to interact with a person in crisis and connect them with appropriate help.
- Expanded content on trauma, substance use, and self-care.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Identify multiple types of professional and self-help resources for older adults.
